Pegasus in Papamoa

Pegasus in Papamoa

Trimax Mowing Systems recently revisited a council reserve in Papamoa to film promotional footage for the new Pegasus Series 5 wide-area roller rotary mower – nearly 20 years after using the same location to gather marketing material for the original Pegasus (now known as the Pegasus Series 1).

A Brief History of the Trimax Pegasus

Initial design work for the Trimax Pegasus S1 began in 2000 after founder and owner Bob Sievwright recognised an opportunity in wide area mowing applications for which the popular Trimax Stealth was too narrow. It was after some discussion with a Trimax dealer in the United Kingdom that the idea was introduced to attach three Trimax ProCuts to a central chassis to create a triple-deck mower.

Back in New Zealand, the research and development team at Trimax created the first Pegasus, complete with newly designed mowing decks attached to a chassis with linkages allowing each deck to follow contours independently. Pegasus was officially launched at the UK’s Saltex trade show in 2001.

Since then, Pegasus has set the benchmark globally for wide area mowing performance. The mower was responsible for helping Trimax get a foothold in the American market as early demonstrations showed that Pegasus delivered an exceptional cut and finish on warm season grasses. This discovery established the turf and sod farming industry as a key customer base in the United States and led to the foundation of Trimax’s permanent facility in the southeast.

New Zealand Local for 40 Years and Counting

Although Trimax Mowing Systems has expanded internationally throughout its 40+ years of operation, its global headquarters have always been based in Tauranga. From their facility on Maleme Street in Greerton, Trimax designs, manufactures, and distributes mowers both for export and for domestic use.

Consequently, when the original Pegasus was ready to be released to market, all its promotional materials were produced locally in New Zealand. The Trimax team relied on their experiences during Pegasus’ development to choose a location that would best showcase the mower’s abilities. That location was the reserve in Papamoa, commonly used by the local pony club.

Trimax Senior Design Engineer Keith Mabey was present for the original Pegasus S1 filming. “I can’t recall any other location that has made the Pegasus decks all articulate and move so independently,” he says. “I remember seeing all the yellow flowers and we all thought it would be a shame to mow them. I guess we thought it would look messy when we were done. But as we mowed, and the contours of the beautiful green grass were exposed, we just realised we were transforming it from one kind of beauty into another. When we were finished it looked fantastic!”

“I think we had a professional photographer out there as well,” says Bob Sievwright, Trimax owner and founder, who operated the tractor and mower for the original Pegasus S1 filming. “It was a long time ago, and we didn’t have the advantage of a drone in those days!”

These days Trimax not only has the advantage of a drone to capture aerial footage, but also employs full-time photographer and videographer staff to produce content supporting sales and servicing of Trimax mowers.

Caleb Graveson, a New Zealand-based Trimax sales representative, worked with the creative team to arrange the Papamoa reserve as the site for filming promotional materials for the Pegasus S5. “I’ve mown there before and found it a great landscape and even better backdrop. I knew this location would also help us tell the story of Trimax and the beautiful place we live in.”

Introducing the Pegasus Series 5

With the Pegasus S5, Trimax introduces its most recent round of major changes to the flagship mower since the previous series was released in 2016. Developments include a new chassis and outrigger arm design to increase strength and impact resistance without requiring the addition of large amounts of steel, reducing overall weight and resulting turf compaction.

New low-maintenance features are also incorporated into the Pegasus S5 design, including automatic belt tensioners to maintain optimum drive to the spindles without manual adjustment, and the new Trimax Titan roller bearing system which does not require greasing. Overall, there are zero daily maintenance requirements on the Pegasus S5, and the simplification of greasing requirements results in an 80% annual reduction in grease consumption.

The Trimax Pegasus S5 wide area rotary mower is available now in New Zealand and Australia, with plans to release to the UK and Europe later this year and the US in 2023.

What’s New on the Trimax Pegasus S5

What’s New on the Trimax Pegasus S5

After over 20 years in production, the Trimax Pegasus is once again bringing mowing innovation to your turf in its latest series, the Trimax Pegasus S5.

The Pegasus S5 builds on the incredible strength, durability, versatility, and efficiency of the previous series to increase machine life and decrease downtime in full-time commercial applications including turf farms, parks and reserves, airports, racecourses, sports fields, and more.

So what’s new about the Trimax Pegasus S5?

It’s stronger.

  • An improved chassis design offers twice the durability in deck lifting and lowering, a 10% increase in strength under tough travel conditions, and a 30% reduction in stresses from rough road travel – all without unnecessary weight increases.
  • Newly engineered outrigger arms increase rigidity by 60% for tough applications such as passive turf and open space mowing. They also reduce stresses from impact on side decks by 15% to prevent damage to the lift arms.
  • A more robust axle and suspension provides smoother transport, reduced wear, and two times the durability on the road.
  • Heavy-duty side channel skid leading edges stand up to larger impact forces, preventing damage to the mower skids in tough applications.
  • New high tensile steel height adjustment rods increase the strength and reliability of Trimax’s easy-to-use cut height adjustment system.

It’s smarter.

  • The Trimax Pegasus S5 has lower maintenance than ever. All daily greasing requirements have been removed, resulting in an 80% reduction in annual grease consumption. Wear bushes are eliminated from the suspension system, and auto belt tensioning has been introduced to maintain optimal drive to the spindles without requiring manual adjustments.
  • The Trimax Titan Roller Bearing System is new on the Pegasus S5 for improved lifespan and retention. The Titan bearing system is sealed, requiring no regular greasing.
  • Trimax QuikLift is a standard integration on all Pegasus S5 models. With QuikLift, mower decks can be slightly raised to traverse driveways, footpaths, pavements, or other obstacles, all without disengaging the PTO.
  • The cut height adjustment system has been refreshed, now employing a 2mm pitch adjuster for increased accuracy. Cut height indicators now show both metric and imperial units. The cut height range has been increased, ranging from 10mm – 110mm (³⁄₈” – 4¹⁄₃”).
  • Setting up and moving between jobs is easier than ever with a simpler transport lock system and an adjustable drawbar to ensure that the Pegasus S5 chassis is level every time it’s hooked up to a tractor.

It’s safer.

  • The Pegasus S5 increases rear-facing light area by over 100%, with improved placement in driver line of sight for a proven increase in visibility to others on the road. There is also an option to integrate clearance lights, a slow mowing beacon, and number plate lights.
  • The mowing decks are equipped with CE compliant weight-bearing and lockable belt chamber covers, which are also less reflective to reduce glare.
  • The optional electric brake system on the Pegasus S5 has been designed to include a breakaway and controller.
  • The changes in outrigger arm design, beyond improving their strength, also improves visibility in the wing mirrors from the tractor cab due to altered deck lift angles. Furthermore, the decks fold up to a narrower position in transport mode to improve rear visibility from the tractor cab.

We’re excited to show you what the Trimax Pegasus S5 can do for your turf. Learn more about the Trimax Pegasus S5 on our website or book a free demo today!

New Trimax Brand Video

PRESS RELEASE

New Zealand-based Trimax Mowing Systems is marking its 40th anniversary of operation in 2021 with the release of a new brand video, sharing the story of the company’s past and looking into the future. Trimax began exporting to Australia through Howard Australia in 1985 and established a permanent Australian facility and distribution network under the Trimax global brand in 2013.

Trimax was founded in 1981 by Bob Sievwright, a New Zealand engineer and salesperson with family roots in agriculture and a passion for high-performance machinery. While working as a salesperson, Bob developed the Gamma Flail, an innovative aerodynamic mower flail which would simplify manufacturing processes and increase operational efficiency as compared to then-contemporary welded flails.

Bob gained his first customer after six weeks of development: Southern Engineering in Tauranga, New Zealand. Unfortunately, the arrangement only lasted a month before Southern Engineering burnt to the ground. In a bold effort to keep the Gamma Flail on the market, Bob bought out the remains of the business and made a deal with another local flail mower manufacturer, Gamman Engineering, combining them to form the beginning of Trimax Mowing Systems.

Bob’s determination to produce results that would lead to the success of his customers set the stage for Trimax’s success. Each problem was a potential opportunity approached with a curious and humble attitude, emphasizing the importance of fully understanding both the customer and the issue before working together toward a solution. “Investment in our customer relationships has supported the growth of our own business,” says Trimax CEO Michael Sievwright.

Today Trimax has manufacturing, assembly, and warehousing facilities in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Michael says, “Trimax has had to learn to adapt to each of our different markets. We learned that we needed to design products to suit market-specific needs and preferences, relying on our technical foundations and pillars of culture to guide our connections to our customers.” Trimax’s rotary and flail equipment is now a market-leading mowing solution around the world and can be found on such high-profile turf as England’s Silverstone Race Circuit and US PGA Championship courses.

Looking to the future, Trimax will continue to build on those foundations and pillars to advance into the digital age, making smarter and more responsive systems and investigating the opportunities offered by emerging technologies such as automation and electrification. “We’ve had 40 years of innovation which challenges the status quo. Thinking outside the box is something we’re good at because we’re driven to find better ways forward,” says Michael Sievwright.
