Trimax Pegasus S5 SR
The Geelong Racing Club relies on consistent, high-quality turf to deliver a safe and professional racing surface. Racecourse Manager James Dalton needed a mowing solution that would significantly reduce cutting time, improve track presentation, and strengthen turf health—while remaining simple to operate and maintain. Since switching to the Trimax Pegasus, the club has seen major improvements in efficiency, cut quality, and long-term cost savings.
Significant Savings, Long Term Value
Switching to the Trimax Pegasus has delivered measurable savings. James estimates a saving of $10,000 annually in labour, diesel, and servicing, with even more additional savings from reduced fertiliser inputs. Fuel use has significantly reduced by 75% with servicing costs also dropping from $2,000–$3,000 to around $500, which is really just on grease and changing the blades. James says, “Over the lifetime of this machine I’d expect to save over $100,000 quite easily.”
From Eight Hours to Two
Efficiency is critical for the Geelong Racing Club’s small team. Before the Pegasus, the club used a 70-inch deck mower, requiring around eight hours and 20 laps to cut the entire track. James explains, “We’re always looking at ways to be more efficient.”
Switching to the Pegasus reduced this task from eight hours to just two, allowing the team to work more effectively and freeing up time for other essential turf management tasks. The club also previously caught grass—long considered the traditional method of racetrack mowing in Australia—but after trialling the Pegasus and seeing the results, the team shifted confidently away from the old approach.
High-Performance Cutting Across the Entire Track
Preparing a clean, even racing surface is one of the most critical aspects of James’s role, and the Pegasus consistently delivers the high standard he requires. He describes the cut quality as “really high,” supported by the mower’s eleven spindles, each equipped with four blades, which generate an exceptionally high clip rate. This ensures a fine, uniform cut across the entire track, even at higher speeds.
The Pegasus’s high-velocity discharge system also prevents the clumping issues the club experienced with its previous mower. James notes that “those clippings are thrown out the back of the mower and you can’t really see where they’ve gone.” This allows the team to cut even longer leaf without risking messy piles of grass or the need for additional raking.
The improvement in presentation is dramatic. The previous out-front deck mower required twenty laps and left visible wheel marks throughout the track. In contrast, the Pegasus completes the entire cut in just three laps, leaving behind what James describes as a “blank, even canvas,” free from tramlines and inconsistencies.
Debunking Concerns, Delivering Healthier Turf
While James initially had concerns about returning clippings, especially regarding potential thatch buildup, his experience with the Pegasus quickly changed his perspective. “What you’re effectively doing is returning nitrogen into the profile,” he says. “I’ve found the plant is a lot more vibrant and healthier, and even my fertilizer inputs have been cut back.”
He also notes stronger colour and density, with less yellowing during winter—an improvement previously only achievable through higher fertiliser rates. “I don’t think this is a common technique to cut racetracks this way, but I think it’s a good way to do it.” In the past, when using an out-front deck mower with a catcher, clippings would accumulate and the catcher sometimes struggled to keep up, leaving problematic clumps that needed to be manually cleared. With the Pegasus, those issues have disappeared entirely. Although this method of mowing is not yet widely adopted in the racing industry, James says, “I would certainly recommend the Trimax Pegasus. The benefits far outweigh the negatives for us here.”
Staff Approved and Operator Friendly
The Pegasus has been a welcomed change for the team as Geelong Racing Club. “The staff love the new setup,” James says. “They’re not sitting in a mower for eight hours a day. They get the job done within two hours and are off to do other tasks.” James strongly recommends the Pegasus for other race clubs, especially those with limited labour resources and large areas of turf to manage. He concludes, “It’s a great machine for that,” emphasising its value not just for track quality but for overall operational efficiency.
