Shillingham Vineyard, located in East Cornwall, is a young and growing operation established in 2021. Spanning just over 50 acres, the vineyard produces five varieties of grapes, with plans to create wine on-site and develop a vineyard tourism experience built around the property and its surroundings.
With a focus on building a strong brand and sustainable operation from the ground up, the team needed reliable equipment that could support both vineyard maintenance and long-term soil health.
A Compact Solution for Vineyard Work
Operating within vineyard rows requires equipment that fits the environment. For Shillingham Vineyard, row width and manoeuvrability were key considerations when selecting a mower. “We have purchased the Trimax Force 145,” Alexander explains. “It’s nice and compact, really solid build, and it’s ideal for our row widths here.” The compact design allows the team to work efficiently through tight spaces while maintaining control of vegetation in the alleyways.
Mulching Prunings for Sustainability
A primary use of the Trimax Force 145 is mulching vineyard prunings and returning that material back into the soil. “Primarily it’s for incorporating the prunings back into the soil as part of our drive really to be more sustainable here,” Alexander says.
The vineyard produces prunings up to 80–90cm long, making it essential to achieve a fine, consistent mulch. The Force handles this material effectively, breaking it down and eliminating larger debris. “It’ll completely eliminate any of the larger prunings in the alleyways,” he explains. This approach supports soil health while reducing the need for additional processes or equipment.
In addition to mulching prunings, the Force 145 is also used to maintain growth between vineyard rows. As Alexander explains, “In the summer months, when we need to keep control of growth in the alleyways, it will also be used for that.” This versatility allows the vineyard to rely on one machine for multiple tasks, improving efficiency across seasonal operations.
