Snake
Across California, golf course superintendents are turning to the Trimax Snake to improve cut quality, reduce clippings, and increase efficiency during peak growing seasons. From high-profile private clubs to public courses with challenging terrain, the Snake has delivered consistent results across a variety of course conditions.
David Wolfsbauer, Superintendent at Valencia Country Club, works for Arcis Golf, an operation based in Dallas that owns over 60 golf courses nationwide. Alongside Valencia Country Club, David also manages Oaks Club Valencia, a course frequently used by professional golfers and celebrities.
In Huntington Beach, Ben Randell oversees the very popular Meadowlark Golf Club course with heavy undulation and uneven terrain. Both superintendents have found the Trimax Snake to be a strong fit for their operations.
Exceptional Cut Quality with Fewer Clippings
For both David and Ben, exceptional cut quality with fewer clippings was one of the first improvements they noticed after introducing the Snake. “The beauty of the machine is the clippings are way lower than your traditional rotary rough mowers,” David says. “So we don’t have to worry about following behind with blowers in the peak growing season.”
Ben had a similar experience at Meadowlark. “Really excited about this mower—right off the bat the quality of cut was really good. Excellent cut,” he says. “It cut down on clippings during our growing season.” The improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed by the course’s golfers either. “Got some good compliments from golfers as well,” Ben adds. “They love the rough—they could find their golf ball.”
David agrees that presentation has noticeably improved. “I think members are really starting to notice it,” he says. The striping is better than what they had previously, and there’s a lot less clipping. In the past, when there were clippings, they would get complaints. Since using the Trimax Snake, Davids says, “we haven’t had complaints in a while.”
Fast and Flexible
Both superintendents point to the Snake’s wide decks as a major productivity advantage. “It’s a great machine in that aspect. It stripes well, the decks are wide so you cover a lot of ground,” David explains. “You can actually mow faster than your traditional rotary machines and have the same quality of cut, if not better.”
At Meadowlark, speed and flexibility are especially important due to the course layout. It’s a two-tier course with a lot of bumps. “Not the smoothest course around,” Ben says. “It’s a good mower for this course—it’s able to flex around all the undulations, so it works really good and gets there fast.”
Aerification Made Simpler
A major benefit for David has been how the Snake performs during fairway aerification. “It’s been awesome for aerification of the fairways,” he says. Traditionally, breaking up plugs required multiple steps—drag mats, chain-link fences, mowing, and blowing. With the Snake, the process has been simplified.
“We aerified the fairways—it took us two days for roughly 30 acres,” David explains. After allowing the plugs to dry until they were “as hard as rock,” the Snake was set down to ¾ of an inch and used to pulverise them. “Came along and mowed behind—no blowing involved. In two days, the whole process, aerification and clean-up, was done. Two days for 30 acres is pretty good.”
Healthier Turf
Reduced clippings also deliver agronomic benefits. “Clippings hold moisture longer,” Ben explains. “You can get more disease that way—fungus can grow when there’s a lot of clippings.” With fewer clippings left behind, Ben has seen improvements in turf health. “You have less clippings, you have drier grass, you have less disease, and less headache for the superintendent.”
Low Maintenance, Simple Operation
Both superintendents highlight the Snake’s straightforward design and minimal maintenance requirements. “Pretty maintenance-free—you’ve just got your grease nipples,” David says. “It’s PTO driven, so there’s no hydraulic issues to worry about, no hydraulic hose leaks. It’s pretty basic and straightforward.”
Ben echoes that experience. “Maintenance is minimal—it’s tightening belts. We haven’t changed the blades yet—they’re quality blades,” he says. Other than occasional sharpening by their mechanic, there’s been very little blade maintenance required.
Saving Fuel, Time, and Labour
Efficiency gains extend beyond mowing speed. Ben notes that fuel savings have been a clear benefit. “We save on fuel using this tractor and the pull-behind Trimax. We save on diesel versus what we used to have.” Labour efficiency has improved as well. “We can mow faster, larger areas quicker, so it saves time on labour—a big bonus there.”
David adds that reduced cleanup work has freed up staff for other tasks. “It makes more available manpower to do other jobs that you don’t traditionally get to,” he says. “That way you can focus more on the details rather than having a guy on a blower.”
A Strong Recommendation from Both Courses
For David, the Snake has proven itself across performance, efficiency, and ease of use. “It’s easy to manoeuvre around the golf course, easy to maintain, easy to keep clean.” He encourages other courses to consider the Snake, especially if they want consistent height across large areas. “If they want to cut everything at one height, it’s a great machine for that—fast, quick, clean, and a great quality of cut. I would highly recommend it—it’s a great machine.”
Ben agrees. “I would highly recommend it—it’s a great mower. It’s saving us money, and we’re getting a better quality of cut.”
