Force

Talia Farms operates approximately 200 hectares of table grapes, with 14 different varieties planted in-ground, alongside plum varieties. With large-scale vineyard operations and high foot traffic through rows, the team requires equipment that is efficient, reliable, and capable of delivering consistent results across multiple applications. For Irrigation Supervisor Tate Mulen, the Trimax Force 205 fixed centre mount has become an essential tool for row levelling, mulching summer pruning, cover crop management, and final mulching.

Reducing Passes, Increasing Efficiency

Efficiency is critical across large vineyard blocks, and Talia Farms found that the Trimax Force 205 delivered immediate gains. “The Trimax mowers have performed great for us,” Tate says. “We’ve gone from a two-pass application to a one-pass application now, so we’ve saved on time.” Tasks that previously required two passes can now be completed in a single pass, saving valuable time and labour.

Cover crops play an important role at Talia Farms, helping improve soil structure and manage weeds. The Force has given the team greater control over when and how these crops are managed. “The Force has definitely increased our time to cover the ground when we are mowing down cover crops,” Tate says. Ground speeds have increased from 5–7 km/h to around 7–10 km/h, allowing the team to work more efficiently with less notice. They can now enter a block with just one day’s notice, mulch cover crops, and have contractors follow immediately behind. “The Force allows us to manage the cover crops a lot better,” Tate explains.

Simple, Proven, and Easy to Maintain

When selecting new machinery, Tate says the priority is equipment that is “simple and proven” with easy maintenance and low upkeep costs—criteria the Force meets with ease. “The maintenance on it is really easy,” he explains. “We wash it down each day, there’s two rotor bearings we grease and the PTO shaft, and that’s about all there is for maintenance on it. It’s quick and easy.”

“Forces meet all those criteria for us. They’re easy, low maintenance, it’s performed well, and we’ve had no issues with it.”

From Slashing to Mulching: A Smarter Approach

Having previously used a slasher, Tate says that switching from slashing to mowing the canes with the Trimax Force has made a big difference. For mulching summer pruning, the rear discharge door is kept fully closed, allowing the Force to chew the canes down as finely as possible. When mowing cover crops, the door is opened fully to increase ground speed and maximise productivity. The result is a far cleaner finish. “We really mulch it down to nothing left,” Tate says, compared to previous machines that left large sticks behind.

Improved Row Levelling and Safer Vineyards

Row levelling has been another major benefit. Previously, the slasher couldn’t cut into the soil effectively, and the rotary hoe turned the dirt over too much. The Force allows the team to work into 20–50mm of soil, levelling rows without excessive soil disruption.

This has created smoother level rows for workers and contractors. With significant foot traffic throughout the vineyard, finer mulch has also reduced trip hazards by eliminating large sticks. The finer material breaks down faster, returning organic matter to the soil and supporting overall soil health.

Looking Ahead with Trimax Force

The positive experience with the Force has led Talia Farms to consider expanding their setup. The team is planning to add a front-mount Trimax Force mulcher, running it in combination with the rear-mounted unit to further improve material breakdown—still in a single pass.

“I highly recommend the Force to other customers,” Tate says. He’s already spoken with operators at other vineyards who are now looking to move away from slashers and toward mulchers to further improve efficiency and finish quality.
